In preparation for the school year, you’ll want to make sure the proper maintenance tasks have been completed for a safe start. This means checking the electrical systems, the kitchen, and even the HVAC system. Browse the maintenance checklist below to get your school ready for serving healthy lunches, providing cool air and more.

HVAC Maintenance

One of the most important parts of a school maintenance checklist is checking the HVAC system. HVAC services include the following tasks:

  • Clean intake and exhaust vents
  • Clean drip pans, drain lines, coils and more
  • Check for excess condensation
  • Test the function of the system dampers
  • Clean or replace filters
  • Check carbon dioxide levels
  • Inspect ductwork
  • Check for dust and mold
  • Test thermostats

Keeping the kitchen clean and maintained is important for a successful school year. Use our kitchen maintenance checklist so you don’t miss any important steps:

General Building Maintenance Tips

Along with the HVAC system and kitchen, there are a few general school maintenance tasks to complete that include:

  • Electrical – When it comes to the electrical system, you’ll want to check for damage, test the circuit breakers, inspect plugs and switches and check that all tags are up to date.
  • Plumbing – Be sure to check the septic tank systems, the water connections and pipes, check for damage around toilets and basins as well as check the conditions of the pipes.
  • Interior Upkeep – Keep an eye out for leaks or water damage on the walls or ceilings, check door and window locks, update signage and inspect desks, chairs, and chalkboards in the room.
  • Exterior Upkeep – Keeping up with the exterior of the school is just as important as the interior. Regularly check the roof, gutters, downpipes and drains, check the vents and external gas pipes, note and repair cracks, inspect windows and doors and ensure there’s no rust or wood rot in vulnerable areas.

In addition to the important upkeeping tasks above, you'll want a better idea of a summer cleaning checklist to get your halls shining for the next school year. Check out our helpful guide to learn more.
