What is an HVAC Contactor?

The contactor is a vital connector in an HVAC system, enabling seamless movement of electricity throughout the AC’s intricate system. This integral component makes sure the electrical currents have an unhindered path and prevents possible damage to other internal aspects of the unit.

How Does an HVAC Contactor Work?

Once in a deactivated state, the contactors in your AC system will be raised. This effectively blocks the electric current from reaching essential components like the condenser, compressor and motors. They only return to a descended position when the unit is turned on, permitting the electrical currents to flow. This mechanism is designed to conserve energy and give the unit the downtime needed when not in use.

What are Signs of a Failing HVAC Contactor?

Some easily recognizable signs of a malfunctioning contactor often include physical signs such as melted casing or audible signs such as chattering or humming. Additionally, if the unit exhibits strange behavior including difficulty turning on or off, this shows an issue with the contactor. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important that you replace the HVAC contactor.

Can a Faulty Contactor Cause System Issues?

Certainly. If the contractor in the AC unit is defective, it can lead to several complications that can include difficulties starting up, insufficient cooling capacity or constant operation despite turning the thermostat completely off.
