The compressor of an HVAC unit functions by compressing refrigerant vapor, increasing the pressure and converting it to hot gas. This hot gas is then condensed as the unit pulls in ambient air using the condensing coil, eventually releasing the heated air from the unit and into the area.
On average, OEM compressors tend to last between 12 and 15 years. They are very dependable in HVAC systems. If you notice it has gone bad before the average time it should last, it’s likely due to an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
HVAC compressors offer a variety of options to choose from, with criteria typically based on the make and model of the system. The different types of HVAC compressors you can find include centrifugal, rotary, screw, reciprocating, scroll, and hermetic reciprocating compressors.
Power the unit off before you begin to test an HVAC compressor. Subsequently, take the protective cover off and detach the wiring before attaching the multimeter. Use the multimeter to measure the distance between the terminals. After testing the compressor, reattach the wires and reinstall the protective cover.
