Hoshizaki-Ice-Bin-Cleaning-Maintenance

Hoshizaki manufactures some of the best ice machines in the world, including dispenser bins. These units not create plenty of refreshing ice for beverages, but they also save lots of space in your establishment. Keeping your ice clean and at its highest quality is essential. A dirty bin can distort the color of your cubes and create a bad taste or smell.

While there are plenty of general tips for cleaning your ice machine, it can be tricky to find specific steps for your exact machine. Luckily, we got you covered. Below are specific instructions for Hoshizaki ice bin cleaning and maintenance, which are common on DB-200H and DB-130H dispensing bin models.

What You Need:

Cleaning & Sanitizing the Ice Bin

Hoshizaki recommends cleaning and sanitizing your bin at least once a year. However, you should consider doing it more frequently depending on the water quality in your area or if your unit is used often.

Cleaning Instructions

  • Step 1. Prepare the machine – Start by disconnecting electrical power to the ice maker and removing all ice from the bin. Once the ice is removed, disconnect the electrical power to the ice bin.
  • Step 2. Clean and sanitize ice maker – Refer to your owner’s manual for cleaning and sanitizing instructions, or check out our Hoshizaki ice machine cleaning tips for help.
  • Step 3. Create open access to the bin – Remove or reposition the icemaker so that you have comfortable access inside the bin.
  • Step 5. Dilute the Hoshizaki Scale Away cleaner – Dilute around 5 oz. of Hoshizaki Scale Away Cleaner into a gallon of warm water. Use immediately for optimal effectiveness.
  • Step 6. Clean the machine – Scrub the interior of the bin as well as the surrounding components like the agitator, bin and front panel spouts, drain board and chute. Use a brush or nylon pad with the solution of warm water and cleaner. After scrubbing, make sure to rinse with warm water.
  • Step 7. Remove the shutter assembly and spout – Remove the snap pin fitted to the shutter shaft. Slide the assembly to the left on a DB-200H and to the right on a DB-130H and remove. Pull out on the sides of the hook to release spout. Lift the spout up and out from the bin, and take off the snap pin and the shaft from shutter. Open out shutter, and remove the shutter and the balance weight. Then, remove the thumbscrews securing the hook and remove the hook.
  • Step 8. Deep clean parts (if necessary) – If some the parts and components you removed are severely dirty, soak in the cleaning solution for about 15 minutes before scrubbing.
  • Step 9. Sanitize after drying – Allow the unit and parts to dry off before sanitizing. See instructions below.

Sanitizing Instructions

  • Step 10. Create a sanitizing solution – Dilute about 0.5 oz. of sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) with about a gallon of warm water. Use immediately for optimal effectiveness.
  • Step 11. Sanitize the bin and surrounding parts – Use a cloth and the sanitizing solution to wipe down the interior of the bin as well as the agitator, bin spout, front panel spout, drain board and chute. Then, rinse them with warm water.
  • Step 12. Sanitize the shutter assembly and spout – Wipe down the spout, shutter, snap pin, weight, shutter shaft, hook and hook thumbscrew.
  • Step 13. Deeply sanitize (if necessary) – If some the parts and components you removed are severely dirty, soak in the sanitizer for about 15 minutes before wiping them down.
  • Step 14. Reattach parts and components – Once everything has dried off, reattach each part and component to the machine. Make sure they’re positioned properly and secure.
  • Step 15. Turn machine on and test – Supply power back to ice dispenser and ice maker. Once it’s on, check that the machine is working properly.
