Cleveland Tilt Skillet Troubleshooting
Tilt skillets and braising pans are some of the most versatile pieces of equipment in a commercial kitchen. Cleveland makes some of the best in business, allowing chefs to easily braise meat or whip up brown and fluffy hotcakes. That's why if issues pop up, authorized technicians are called on to make repairs quickly. Fortunately, we have Cleveland tilt skillets and braising pans troubleshooting steps to help any technician in a pinch.

Cleveland SEL Tilt Skillet Won't Heat
When an SEL electric tilt skillet won't heat, the following issues might be present. Make sure to use an authorized wiring diagram for this procedure.
Troubleshooting Sequences for SEL-30/40-T1 Models
- No power to the skillet - See if there is no voltage being supplied to the primary of the power transformer.
- Faulty power transformer - If voltage is supplied to the unit, check that there is 120 volts of AC power supplied to the power transformer's secondary. When there isn't 120 volts of AC power at the secondary, replace the power transformer.
- Faulty 3 AMP fuse - If there aren't 120 volts of AC power to the 24-volt transformer's primary, replace the 3 AMP fuse.
- Faulty 24-volt transformer - When there isn't 24 volts of AC power being supplied to the 24-volt transformer's secondary, replaced the transformer.
- Faulty 1.25 AMP fuse - Check the ON/OFF switch for 24 volts of AC power. If there isn't power, replace the 1.25 AMP fuse.
- Faulty ON/OFF switch - If there isn't 24 volts of AC power to the high-limit switch, replace the ON/OFF switch.
- Faulty high limit - Check that the mercury switch is being supplied with 24 volts of AC power. If it's not, replace the high limit.
- Faulty or displaced mercury tilt switch - See if 24 volts of AC power is going to terminal 9 of the thermostat board. If not, make sure the skillet is in the down position. If the skillet is down, you'll need to replace or adjust the mercury tilt switch.
- Faulty thermostat - See if there is 24 volts of AC power going to heat relay coil with the thermostat is set above the pan's temperature. If not, check the resistance of the thermistor probe. If the resistance is at 1100 at 80 degrees, 1350 at 200 degrees, 1450 at 250 degrees, 1550 at 300 degrees and 1650 at 350 degrees, replace the thermostat.
- Faulty thermistor - When there isn't 24 volts of AC power going to heat relay coil and thermistor resistance is not at 1100 at 80 degrees, 1350 at 200 degrees, 1450 at 250 degrees, 1550 at 300 degrees and 1650 at 350 degrees, replace the thermistor.
- Faulty heat relay - If there aren't 120 volts of AC power going to the coil of the heater contractors, replace the heat relay.
- Faulty elements - When there is 120 volts of AC power going to the coil of the heater contractors and supply voltage to the elements, replace the open elements.
- Faulty contactor - If there isn't supply voltage going to the elements, replace the contactor.

Troubleshooting Sequences for SEL-30/40-TR Models
- No power between terminals 2 and 1 - When there is no power on the terminal strip in the terminal strip between terminals 2 and 1, make sure to check Fuse FS1 and the breaker.
- Faulty power switch - When power is absent on the terminal strip in the component box between terminals 2 and 1, replace the power switch.
- Faulty transformer - Check for 120 volts of AC power at the X1 and X2 on the secondary of transformer. If there isn't 120 volts, replace the transformer.
- Faulty fuse FS3 - With or without the tilt switch interrupted, check if there is 120 volts of AC power between the X2 on the transformer's secondary side and terminal 7 on the terminal strip. If not, replace the fuse FS3.
- Faulty interrupt switch - With the tilt switch interrupted, check if there is 120 volts of AC power between the X2 on the transformer's secondary side and terminal 7 on the terminal strip. If so, replace the interrupt switch.
- Faulty high limit - On the electronic thermostat, see if there is 120 volts of AC power between terminals 9 and 7. If not, replace the high limit.
- Faulty thermostat - See if there is 120 volts of AC power on thermostat going between terminals 10 and 7. If not, check the resistance of the thermistor probe. If the resistance is at 1100 at 80 degrees, 1350 at 200 degrees, 1450 at 250 degrees, 1550 at 300 degrees and 1650 at 350 degrees, replace the thermostat.
- Faulty thermistor - When there isn't is 120 volts of AC power on the thermostat going between terminals 10 and 7 and thermistor probe resistance isn't at 1100 at 80 degrees, 1350 at 200 degrees, 1450 at 250 degrees, 1550 at 300 degrees and 1650 at 350 degrees, replace the thermistor.
- Faulty thermostat wires - If there isn't 120 volts of AC power across the contactor coils, repair or replace the thermostat wires.
- Faulty contactor - If there is 120 volts of AC power across the contactor coils but the contactor doesn't pull in, repair or replace the thermostat wires.
- Elements are heating up - When there is an amp draw at the element, give elements more time to heat up.
- Faulty element - When there isn't an amp draw at the element, replace the element.

Cleveland SGL Tilt Skillet Won't Ignite
When an SGL gas tilt skillet won't ignite, the following issues might be present. Make sure to use an authorized wiring diagram for this procedure.
Troubleshooting Sequences for SGL-30/40-TR Models
- No power between terminals 2 and 1 - When there is no power on the terminal strip in the terminal strip between terminals 2 and 1, make sure to check Fuse FS1 and the breaker.
- Faulty power switch - When power is absent on the terminal strip in the component box between terminals 2 and 1, replace the power switch.
- Faulty transformer - If there isn't 24 volts of AC power on transformer's secondary, replace the transformer.
- Faulty fuse FS3 - With or without the tilt switch interrupted, check if there is 24 volts of AC power between the ground on the transformer's secondary side and terminal 7 on the terminal strip. If not, replace the fuse FS3.
- Faulty interrupt switch - With the tilt switch interrupted, check if there is 24 volts of AC power between the ground on the transformer's secondary side and terminal 7 on the terminal strip. If so, replace the interrupt switch.
- Faulty high limit - On the electronic thermostat, see if there is 24 volts of AC power between terminal 9 and circuit ground. If not, replace the high limit.
- Faulty thermostat - See if there is 24 volts of AC power on thermostat between terminal 10 on the thermostat and the circuit ground. If not, check the resistance of the thermistor probe. If the resistance is at 1100 at 80 degrees, 1350 at 200 degrees, 1450 at 250 degrees, 1550 at 300 degrees and 1650 at 350 degrees, replace the thermostat.
- Faulty thermistor - When there isn't 24 volts of AC power on the thermostat between terminal 10 on the thermostat and the circuit ground and thermistor probe resistance isn't at 1100 at 80 degrees, 1350 at 200 degrees, 1450 at 250 degrees, 1550 at 300 degrees and 1650 at 350 degrees, replace the thermistor.
- Faulty thermostat wires - If there isn't 24 volts of AC power on the ignition module between terminals 2 and 5, repair or replace the thermostat wires.
- Faulty ignition module - If no spark is present at the igniter and there isn't 24 volts of AC power supplied to the gas valve for four seconds, replace the ignition module.
- Faulty gas valve - If there is still gas supplied to the burners after performing sequences, the gas valve could be broken. Replace it.
- No gas supply - If there isn't gas being supplied to the burners, gas supply has been obstructed or shut off to the entire unit.

Cleveland SGL Tilt Skillet Short Cycles
When an SGL gas tilt skillet short cycles, the following issues might be present. Make sure to use an authorized wiring diagram for this procedure.
Troubleshooting Sequences for SGL-30/40-TR Models
- Skillet won't ignite - Follow the sequences above.
- Faulty high limit - On the electronic thermostat, see if there is 24 volts of AC power between terminal 9 and circuit ground. If not, replace the high limit.
- Faulty thermostat wires - If the thermostat isn't cycling before the set point and there isn't 24 volts of AC power on the ignition module, repair or replace the thermostat wires.
- Faulty thermistor probe - If the thermostat is cycling before the set point and thermistor probe resistance isn't at 1100 at 80 degrees, 1350 at 200 degrees, 1450 at 250 degrees, 1550 at 300 degrees and 1650 at 350 degrees, replace the thermistor probe.
- Faulty thermostat - If the thermostat is cycling before the set point and thermistor probe resistance is at 1100 at 80 degrees, 1350 at 200 degrees, 1450 at 250 degrees, 1550 at 300 degrees and 1650 at 350 degrees, replace the thermostat.
