Cleaning the Interior

Cleaning the Exterior
When cleaning the refrigerator exterior, don’t use abrasive cloths, paper towels, newspapers or steel wool. Avoid abrasive powders like scouring pads or harsh liquids such as ammonia. Since citric acid can permanently discolor stainless steel, avoid citrus-based cleaners, too.
Painted / Colored, Black Stainless Steel and Fingerprint-Resistant Stainless Steel Refrigerators
- Step 1. Wash the exterior - Using a soapy cloth, wipe the exterior surface to remove dust, food particles and other residues. If cleaning a stainless steel surface, be sure to wipe in the direction of the grain.
- Step 2. Rinse the exterior - Wipe off any soap suds or remaining residues with a damp cloth.
- Step 3. Dry the refrigerator - Remove any remaining moisture with a clean cloth.
Traditional Stainless Steel Refrigerators
If Stainless Steel Cleaner and Brightener Are Available
When cleaning the exterior of a Whirlpool stainless steel refrigerator, be sure to always rub in the direction of the grain.
- Step 1. Clean the stainless steel finish - Spray the cleaner on a microfiber cloth and wipe the stainless steel exterior.
- Step 2. Apply the stainless steel brightener - Use a microfiber cloth to apply the brightener to the refrigerator exterior. Avoid contact with plastic parts, trim pieces or rubber gaskets.
- Step 3. Let the brightener sit - Once the polish is applied, let it sit on the refrigerator surface for 2-3 minutes.
- Step 4. Remove the brightener - Use a damp cloth to remove the brightener.
If Stainless Steel Cleaner Isn’t Available
Even if not using stainless steel cleaner or brightener chemicals, be sure to wipe the surface in the direction of the grain.
- Step 1. Wash the exterior - Use warm, soapy water and a soft sponge to clean the stainless steel.
- Step 2. Rinse by hand - Remove any remaining food residues or soap suds with a damp cloth.
- Step 3. Dry the exterior - Water can cause discoloration on stainless steel surfaces, so be sure to remove any remaining moisture with a clean cloth.
How to Clean Refrigerator Gaskets
Dirt and other particles can build up on the seals around the door, making it difficult for the door to close completely. So, be sure to clean the gaskets as well.
- Step 1. Wash the gaskets - Wipe the gaskets with warm, soapy water using a soft sponge or cloth.
- Step 2. Remove soap suds - Use a damp cloth to remove any remaining food particles or soap suds.
- Step 3. Dry the gaskets - To prevent mold, be sure to dry the gaskets thoroughly.
- Step 4. Rub with wax - Apply a thin coat of paraffin wax after cleaning.
Cleaning Whirlpool Refrigerator Coils
Normally, routine cleaning of condenser coils isn’t necessary in residential settings. However, if you live in a dusty environment or have pets, clean the condenser coils once every 2 to 3 months to make sure the coils are operating efficiently.
- Step 1. Remove the base grille - To access the condenser coils, remove the base grille.
- Step 2. Clean the coils - Use a vacuum cleaner or soft brush to clean the grille, open areas behind the grille and the front surface of the condenser.
- Step 3. Replace the base grille - Once you are done cleaning the coils, put back the base grille.
