Picture - How to Use a Krowne Back Bar Cooler

Krowne is known for its wide selection of bar-related refrigeration equipment. Their back bar coolers, mug frosters and bottle coolers allow staff members to serve refreshing drinks in chilled mugs quickly and efficiently, improving the guest experience.

Although using these units is fairly straightforward, it’s good to have written operating instructions on hand. With this guide on how to use a Krowne back bar cooler, you'll learn about setting the temperature and defrosting your unit so that it works as efficiently as possible.

This guide is for models such as the BS back bar cooler, MC mug froster and BC bottle cooler series.

Back Bar Cooler Temperature Setting

Pre-Set Average Operating Temperature: 35°F

Average Operating Range: 32° to 40°F

Setting the Temperature

These instructions are for self-contained units: remote units must be set by a technician.

  • Step 1. Press “SET” for 1 second - The set value will start flashing after a few moments.
  • Step 2. Adjust the temperature - Use the “UP” and “DOWN” buttons to increase or decrease the temperature.
  • Step 3. Confirm the new temperature - Press “SET” to confirm.

Defrosting the Unit Manually

Begin the defrost cycle by pressing “DOWN” for more than 3 seconds to begin the defrost cycle.

Mug Froster Operating Instructions

Pre-Set Average Operating Temperature: 5°F

Average Operating Range: -1° to 10°F

Loading the Unit

  • Step 1. Clean and dry the drinkware / dinnerware - Be sure that all mugs, glasses and plates are clean, dry and at room temperature before placing them into the unit.
  • Step 2. Frost the drinkware - Allow 20 to 60 minutes to frost the drinkware.

Defrosting the Evaporator Coil Manually

Normally, an auto evaporator defrost cycle occurs once every 4 hours. However, if the evaporator coil freezes up, defrost the evaporator coil manually. Begin the defrost cycle by pressing and holding the “DOWN” button for more than 3 seconds until “DEF” is displayed on the thermostat.

It should be noted that an automatic fullbox defrost cycle takes place from 5-9 a.m. daily.

Bottle Cooler Temperature Adjustment

Pre-Set Average Operating Temperature: 36°F

Average Operating Range: 32° to 40°F

Changing the Temperature

  • Step 1. Adjust the thermostat - Use a flat-head screwdriver to adjust the thermostat on the front of the evaporator housing inside the unit.
  • Step 2. Increase or decrease the temperature - Be sure to adjust the temperature in small increments to avoid damaging the unit.

Defrosting the Unit Manually

If the temperature is too low, the coil will freeze, eventually resulting in a higher box temperature and the compressor burning out. So if the coil freezes, defrost the unit manually.

  • Step 1. Open up the unit - Unplug the unit, open the doors and let the cooler defrost for 24 hours.
  • Step 2. Reset the unit to factory settings - Once the unit is defrosted, be sure to turn back the knob to the factory settings to prevent the coil from freezing again.
