How to Clean a Bunn Coffee Grinder
Nothing beats the taste of freshly ground coffee, and Bunn is one of the best at manufacturing commercial grinders. In order to keep that perfect grind and delicious taste, routine maintenance and cleaning is a must. While the task might seem difficult, it’s actually pretty easy. Below are simple steps for how to clean a Bunn coffee grinder.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Soft cloths
- Mild liquid detergent (non-abrasive)
- Stiff brush (non-metallic bristles)
Cleaning a Bunn Coffee Grinder
Once you have the right supplies, follow the cleaning procedure below:
Step 1. Prepare the Machine
Before you get started, make sure the unit is off and the power cord is unplugged from the wall outlet.
Step 2. Clean the Exterior
With mild liquid detergent and warm water, dampen a soft cloth. Use the damp cloth to wipe down the grinder’s exterior surfaces. You can use a soft-bristle brush to scrub off any stuck-on residue. Avoid using abrasive materials or tools that can damage the exterior.
Step 3. Empty the Hopper
To remove all the remaining coffee beans from the hopper, plug the grinder back in and put an empty bag behind the dispensing chute or trifecta brew cup. Press the “Start” switch, and run a few cycles to let the grinder’s chamber empty out. Once all the beans are dispensed, turn off the machine and unplug it from the power outlet. Then, remove the bag or brew cup.
Step 4. Disassemble the Grind Chamber
To thoroughly clean the grind chamber and its parts, follow these disassembly instructions for your model.
G1, G2, G3 & G2 Trifecta Models:
- Unfasten the two screws, and remove both the dial plate and selector knob assembly.
- Slide out the burr auger rotor/spring assembly from the motor shaft.
- Unfasten both screws that hold the stationary burr to the chamber.
- Remove the chute by unfastening the four screws at the tip of chute.
- Remove the C-clips that secure the flapper arm to the chute. Use a pair of pliers for removal.
- Carefully remove each flapper securing pin. Make sure to account for each flapper spring.
LPG & LPG-2E Models:
- Remove burr housing cap assembly by unfastening the two screws that connect it to the burr housing.
- Remove the load disc, and slide out the rotor with the lower burr, spring and brass brushing from the motor shaft.
Step 5. Wash the Grind Chamber Parts
Using warm water and the mild detergent, thoroughly clean each of the disassembled parts from the step above. Scrub carefully using a stiff-bristle brush. After scrubbing, rinse them in warm water and let them air dry.
Step 6. Clean the Grind Chamber
Using a dry, stiff-bristle brush, clean the grind chamber, chute opening and both the dial plate assemble and plate opening. Then, wipe them down with a wet cloth that has been soaked in mild detergent and hot water. Rinse and allow the area to dry.
Step 7. Reassemble the Grind Chamber
To reassemble the grind chamber properly, follow these disassembly instructions for your model.
- G1, G2, G3 & G2 Trifecta models – Reinstall the spring, rotor and burr onto the motor shaft. Reassemble the shear plate by lining up the motor shaft’s slot with the rotor. Then, reinstall both the grind selector and rotor cup.
- LPG & LPG-2E models – Reinstall the brass brushing, spring and rotor with the lower burr on the motor shaft. Then, reassemble both the load disc with the flat side toward the rotor and the burr housing assemble to the burr housing.
Maintaining a Bunn Coffee Grinder
Below are routine maintenance procedures designed to help extend the life of your machine:
- Replace the dechaffer assembly – In addition to weekly cleanings, replace the dechaffer assembly on the grinder at least every six months.
- Annual check-up – At least once a year, check and clean side plates, burrs and grind chamber. Replace any parts that are significantly worn out.
